Whew. At 14:30, the agency said to call back in two hours. At 16:15 (I'm impatient) they said they'd know more in an hour. At 17:10, with the office twenty minutes from closing, I got my passport back. The Russian consulate has kept the letter of invitation, the paperwork, the photographs and the cash, but they gave back my passport. The last is enough of a relief that find I don't care terribly about everything else; it's expensive and a pain in the ass, but the fear of blowing my green card interview has made everything else a transient irritation. Oh, Russia, you wacky bureaucratic scoundrels.

The Russian visa is "Cancelled" rather than "Refused", which might mean this is resolvable along the way, but also might mean I'm that proceeding with the hastily formed Plan C which is to fly from Ulan Bator to Vietnam and let the Russian-speaking world continue on without me.

On the way back to the office I saw a guy on a bike get smacked hard by a cab (he was ok but furious) which of course put everything into perspective in a far more cliched way.
